A thesis performance in drag, on the other hand, is a bit of a rarity. Charles Ludlam's play, subtitled “A Penny Dreadful,” is a mashup of vaudevillian gags, literary allusions and melodramatic conceits written for two actors to play eight roles between them. The Mystery of Irma Vep is often considered one of Ludlam's best, most popular plays – and one that relies on two actors of the same sex (that's in the contract, folks) to play more than a half-dozen roles in a send-up of Gothic horror with more quick changes than, well, a Cher concert. €The Mystery of So, between us, Jaime Maseda '11 and I play a British lord, his wife, their two servants, an Egyptian guide, an ancient mummy brought back to life, a werewolf, and a mysterious masked intruder. Currently on view at Langham Court, this whimsical thriller is part Monty Python and part The Mystery of Irma Vep, with a smidgeon of Airplane! ACTOR TWO plays: NICODEMUS UNDERWOOD, the lascivious stablehand. Playing every character in the production, McNicoll and Gray are on top form, bouncing off each other (and around the stage) like two schoolboys at their Christmas play. €I play three roles,” says Dito van One of them comes up, in the moment, with a strong choice and the other instantly responds to and builds on it. Shakespeare & Company, Lenox, MA www.shakespeare.org through March 27, 2011 by Shera Cohen. ACTOR ONE plays: JANE TWISDEN, the self-important housemaid. The play's title is a misnomer. She's the costume designer for Shakespeare & Company's current production, The Mystery of Irma Vep, a play in which what happens offstage is just as intriguing—and potentially chaotic—as the onstage action. A hit in both London and New York, Barlow's 39 Steps has been playing to great acclaim at regional houses the past few years, including a memorable production up in Chemainus this time last year. If you've ever seen and enjoyed a Hammer Horror or the Carry On team's take on them, the very (very) funny Carry On Screaming, then the chances are high that The Mystery of Irma Vep, now on at Edinburgh's Lyceum until 14 March, is for you.
